What is a Podiatrist?
A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) is a physician and surgeon specialized exclusively in the foot, ankle, and lower leg. Following four years of podiatry school and three years of surgical residency, DPMs are experts in managing everything from routine care to complex reconstructive surgery and limb salvage.
Podiatrist vs. Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon:
While both are highly trained surgeons, their educational paths differ in focus:
Podiatrist (DPM):
Specializes in the foot and ankle from the first day of podiatry school and throughout their entire surgical residency.
Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon (MD/DO)
Following four years of medical school and five years of surgical residency training as a general orthopedist, foot and ankle orthopedists complete a one-year fellowship in foot and ankle
Do they perform the same procedures?
Yes. There is overlap in the operating room. Both Podiatrists and Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Surgeons perform a wide range of surgical procedures related to the foot and ankle, including: Reconstructive Surgery (Flatfoot, High Arches, Joint Fusions). Trauma & Fracture Care (Ankle, Heel, and Midfoot Fractures). Tendon & Ligament Repair (Achilles Tendon, Chronic Instability). Bunion & Hammertoe Corrections. Ankle and foot fusions.
Choosing Your Specialist
Because the surgical scope is similar, the best choice often comes down to the individual surgeon’s experience, clinical focus, and your specific goals. Our practice is dedicated to providing personalized, comprehensive care to keep you active and mobile.
